Redundant Farm Buildings get £1.7m Refit.

Redundant farm buildings have been transformed into state-of-the-art eco offices after a 1.7m refit. Communications and events firm MotivAction moved into Widbury Barns outside Ware after a nine month revamp that has secured the future of the Grade II listed building.

Our brief was to design and install an energy efficient comfort cooling system to serve the newly constructed offices whilst keeping the number of outdoor units to a minimum. To allow independent metering in each zone we selected three Daikin VRV (Variable Refrigerant Volume) systems in the main barn and four split systems in the new extension and server room. This was all supported by detailed AutoCAD drawings at every step throughout the design process.

Installing air conditioning in a listed building is always a challenge and in this case we feel it has been successfully achieved. This is particularly evident with the exposed ducting on the first floor giving that contrasting industrial feel where old meets new.

''I would like to thank Blue Sky Air Conditioning for their contribution in the conversion of Widbury Farm Barns into commercial premisis'' Georgina Turner - Architect, The Morton Partnership.

Elliot Baxter (EBB)- Farnborough

Elliott Baxter is the UK's leading independent paper supplier. Working directly for EBB and in close partnership with the interior fit-out contractor Blue Sky installed a Daikin 3-pipe VRV system, heat recovery ventilation (HRV) and a WC extract ventilation system into their new head office in Farnborough.

Anytime Fitness - Tamworth

Working for the main contractor, Blue Sky carry out multiple nationwide installations at Anytime Fitness Gyms. The contracts include the installation of ceiling cassette multi systems , heat recovery ventilation (HRV) and WC / shower room extract ventilation. All services are exposed giving an industrial feel with galvanized ducting and cable tray on show.

Connectix - Braintree

Connectix has been a leading manufacturer of communications products since 1993 and is amongst the top four cabling system suppliers to the British market. When things started to get a little too warm for the employees Blue Sky were called in to install multiple split air con systems using ceiling cassettes.

London City Bond - Barking

London City Bond was one of our first customers back in 2002 when we installed air con in their offices at Tilbury Freeport. They now reside in a new 100,000 ft2 warehouse facility in Barking and are the UK's leading tax warehousing company for fine wine merchants and global investors. Their offices now benefit from being heated and cooled using Daikin cassettes and wall mounted systems. We continue to regularly maintain their systems making LCB our longest running maintenance contract.

Maritime House - Barking

Working for the interior fit-out company, Blue Sky designed and installed a Daikin 3-pipe VRV system with 13 x ducted fan coil units into the newly refurbished ground floor offices. In addition to the air con we adapted the existing landlords ventilation system to introduce fresh air into the office space via the ducted fan coil units. The project was completed on budget and on time all ready for the new tenant to move in.

Webber St Gobain - Flitwick, Beds

Webber St Gobain are the world's leading industrial mortar manufacturer. Over the past 2 years Blue Sky have installed a heat recovery 3-pipe VRV systems into their main office building and split air con systems and heat recovery ventilation (HRV) into their training academy at Flitwick. We continue to maintain all air con equipment on site visiting up to 6 times per annum.

Toni & Guy Hairdressing Salon - Chelmsford

The Toni & Guy salon is situated in the heart of Chelmsford's busy town centre and closing the doors to their clients while the old R22 air conditioning systems were being replaced was not an option.

The low efficiencies and increased running costs of the ageing systems coupled with the ban of (virgin) R22 refrigerant for servicing were the deciding factors to carry out the replacement. Three new Daikin systems operating on the currennt R410a refrigerant were installed to minimise future down time and servicing costs.

To avoid disruption to both clients and staff Blue Sky de-commissioned the redundant systems outside of working hours and installed two new Daikin Roundflow cassettes in the salon and a wall mounted system in the reception area.

The National Tennis Centre - Roehampton SW15

The National Tennis Centre, which is part of the Lawn Tennis Association, opened in 2007 and is a focal point for Britain's top players. It has 22 courts, player accommodation and a world class sports science centre.

During the summer of 2011 Blue Sky installed two Daikin VRV (variable refrigerant volume) systems into the 22 bedroom player accommodation block. The systems were installed on a phased basis with a short break during Wimbledon week to ensure maximum occupancy was maintained. The VRV systems incorporated a central itouch controller located in the reception area, patio door interlocks and a refrigerant leak detection system in each of the rooms.

'Thanks for all your help. The team were excellent and the feedback from people staying in the accommodation here has been very positive'. - Dan Gomm, Operations Manager LTA.

Megaman – Welwyn Garden City

Megaman Welwyn Garden City photoMegaman (UK) Ltd is a leading distributor and manufacturer of low energy lamps. Due to expansion, they moved into new premises on the Quadrant Park development in Welwyn Garden City. The building had two existing Daikin 20kW twin cassette systems and two Daikin heat recovery ventilation (HRV) systems serving open plan areas on two floors. These systems were part of the original build.

Blue Sky was asked to carry out modifications to the HRV systems to ensure adequate fresh air could be provided to the new internal offices. We also installed a new 15.5kW Daikin variable refrigerant volume (VRV) heat pump system with six indoor fan coil units each serving a cellular office and two independent Daikin ‘roundflow’ cassette split systems to serve the conference room and reception area.

One Hammersmith Grove - London W5

One Hammersmith Grove London W5 photoHammersmith Grove is a landmark serviced office building located next to the Lyric Theatre. The building has been extensively refurbished to provide high quality, air conditioned office space for SME's and corporate clients. Blue Sky designed and installed a Daikin 2-pipe VRV cooling system for newly constructed meeting rooms on the first floor and installed split systems in new computer server rooms on the first and tenth floors.

'We were impressed from the beginning with Blue Sky, the customer service is first class and I would recommend them' - Jill Jackson, Operations Director Avanta Ltd.

The Firevault Restaurant - London W1

The Firevault Restaurant London W1 photoThe Firevault Restaurant found overheating in the summer months was a familiar problem. Blue Sky Air Conditioning were recommended to cool things down a little, whilst maintaining the stylish interior and without having to close for business. We discreetly installed five Mitsubishi inverter driven heat pumps and completed the installation outside restaurant hours. Business carried on as usual.

HTC Milton Keynes - Heat Recovery Ventilation (HRV)

Crownhill Milton Keynes Heat Recovery Ventilation (HRV) photoWith security changes to the windows, high occupancy levels and new partition layouts our client required a cost effective ventilation solution to meet building regulations in their new 28,000 ²ft offices. Blue Sky installed 15 Daikin ceiling void mounted Heat Recovery Ventilation (HRV) systems complete with ductwork, grilles and controls.

HRV systems provide a cost and energy efficient ventilation solution by pre-heating or cooling incoming outside air with exhaust air from the internal space. In this way additional outside air loads (cooling in summer and heating in winter) are significantly reduced. HRV units achieve up to 80% thermal efficiency and can operate without any supplemental heating in winter ambient temperatures down to minus 10°c.

The total installation cost for HRV systems qualify for Enhanced Capital Allowance (ECA) which means the owners can reclaim 100% tax allowance in their current tax year.

Hyperfi - Electrical Clearance Superstore, Romford

Hyperfi Electrical Clearance Superstore PhotoBlue Sky have looked after Hyperfi’s air conditioning since their showroom was in Barking, so when they relocated to their larger flag ship premises on the A12 in Romford we were asked us to provide the air conditioning.

To offset the high heat loads generated by televisions, audio equipment and lighting we installed multiple Mitsubishi ceiling mounted cassette systems in the showroom. In the back of house offices, smaller wall mounted systems were installed.

Since working for Hyperfi we have also carried out domestic installations in two of the Directors houses.

WDL - Colchester, Essex

Hyperfi Electrical Clearance Superstore PhotoWDL are principally a website design company based in central Colchester. Since moving into their new premises in 2009, Blue Sky have been gradually working their way through the three storey office building in East Street installing multiple Daikin air conditioning systems.
